5/5 Stayed Dec 2016
wakabear Chicago, IL
We're just returning from a week-long stay, our family of 6 (4 kids ages 9-13), plus a pair of grandparents, all stayed in the home. We have been to Osa once before, on the Puerto Jimenez side, and wanted to try something different. The home itself: beautiful, with finishes and a level of cleanliness and comfort not often found often in this raw jungle environment, cleaned every day, even laundry service! We had Adriana prepare 2 of our dinners. Located up a steep hill, and as a result Mark advised in our specific case (70+ yr old parents coming along) that we actually bring our 4WD car which was a great idea, as I could drive them up/down the hill anytime. The rest of us managed the up/down walk just fine. The caretakers, Ruben and Adriana are delightful. My wife speaks Spanish so we really got to interact, but clearly they have hosted many (if not most) guests who don't speak Spanish. Spending a week on the Sierpe was beautiful, interesting, different ... an experience unto itself. Learning about its own unique ecosystem, seeing crocodiles, various monkeys, sloths, toucans, scarlet macaws, and the usual amazing array of other wonders ranging from bugs on the ground to stars in the sky. If you're searching this listing you're probably a traveler who values a bit of roughness, dirt on the shoes, etc, to gain a unique and memorable experience like this sort of remote listing can offer. My advice for this house: plan an active week of tours, spend time on the boat with Ruben, and you'll feel you got superb value. We went fishing 3 times, had one lucky afternoon with a red snapper and grouper grilled that evening flavored with fresh limes we'd gotten with a whole lot of other fruits (pineapple, papaya, sugar cane, bananas) from amazing 94 year old Jose Angel at his tucked away fruit farm. Gorgeous swimming beach a 10 minute boat ride away. Wildlife / monkey viewing directly from the house was not quite as intense as previous rentals for us (maybe due to tree types, or perhaps loud kids!), but we got nice monkey viewing during the trip and elsewhere on property. Example: very early morning of departure, walking to the dock we saw a hawk snatch a snake for breakfast, directly above him were capuchin monkeys squabbling, while two horses walked by ... then we took the boat into Sierpe as sun came up, flocks of birds following us up-river ... wow! Finally, Mark is 100% dedicated to making the trip successful, safe, fun!

Owner's Response:
Thank you very much for taking the time to write such an in-depth review, we sincerely appreciate it! It was an absolute pleasure hosting you and your family for your holiday vacation. I must say that you not only offered great advice in regards to taking advantage of the included tours but you also lived it while you were visiting. You and your family were one of the most active sets of guest that we have ever had. Being out and about enjoying the included tours from almost sunrise to sunset you certainly got to experience the magic of Casa Rio Sierpe (maybe that was why you did not see many animals from the house, you were not there often enough, you were to busy out adventuring!????. Seriously though I am very regretful that you did not see many monkeys directly from the house, that is not the norm, typically we have daily visitors of both the White Face Capuchin Monkeys as well as the Howler Monkeys often at the same time. We are somewhat relieved that you and your family were able to see them in other parts of the immediate property.
It's fantastic news that you believed that your vacation with us was an outstanding value, that was our goal and our #1 priority. Thank you so much for choosing to come and visit us and we hope to see you and your family again in the future.
Warmest regards,
Mark and Lisley
